History of the Department of Community Medicine
The history of the department of Preventive Medicine and. Primary Care dates back to 1948 when the department of Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM) was created as one of the four foundation departments of the Faculty of Medicine, University College Ibadan. The old department of PSM was divided into 3 sub departments in 1996. Community Medicine was one of the sub departments and it attained full departmental status in 2000. In 2002, the three departments which evolved from the old department of PSM, Department of Human Nutrition and the Institute of Child Health were brought together to form the Faculty of Public Health. The department of Community Medicine however retained its presence in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and is located in both Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Public Health. A further development in the department was the creation of a new department of Health Policy and Management in 2011. This new department works closely with the department of Community Medicine. Upon the creation of the new department, the department of Community Medicine was renamed Preventive Medicine & Primary Care. The department serving serves as the link between Public Health and Clinical Medicine.

Mission
– Providing Continuing Education on current issues in Public Health and Community Medicine
– Conducting collaborative and multi-disciplinary research which has practical applications in solving the health problems of the African population.
– Providing community based health services and specialist care for communities and special groups.
– Offering clinical services at the University College Hospital and outreach stations.
Research Focus of the Department
The department has a long history of research into public health problems in Nigeria. Earlier work in the department of PSM focused on endemic diseases such as schistomiasis, lymphatic filarias, onchocerciasis and dracontiasis – the outcome of a strong epidemiology emphasis. In recent years with the changing pattern of disease and the further development of other subspecialty areas, research activities in the department have covered other areas.
The departmental research agenda aims to utilize research to provide evidence-based public health practices to achieve a reduction of preventable diseases of public health importance. The department is currently engaged in research in the following areas:
– Health Systems and Services Research
– Longitudinal Studies in focused Communities
– Infectious Disease Research
– Non-Communicable disease research; injury prevention, preventive oncology
– Tobacco Related Research
– Domestic Violence
– Small Scale Industries Women’s Health
– Workplace Health and Safety
Academic staff in the department are engaged in research with other institutions in Finland, the U.S and South Africa.
W produce a critical mass of champions that would meet immediate and future production and reproductive health needs and development.
Over the years, CPRH has pioneered and provides leadership for acquisition of RH service and research skills and has been in the forefront of translation of research into practice aimed at improving the quality of maternal, newborn and child health in the country
