Nigeria Strengthening National Capacity for Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (EMONC) Technical Backstopping & Mentoring – Supported by: UNFPA 6th & 7th Country Programme in UNFPA selected states.

CPRH was supported by UNFPA in the effectiveness of comprehensive Emonc Services, the Centre for Population and Reproductive health to reinforce and to provide technical support on EmonC for health workers in selected states are Akwa-Ibom, Kebbi, Lagos and FCT, Nigeria. The project started with strategic facilities preparatory and planning meeting with all the stakeholders’ partners at Ibadan- to discuss on the different phases of the project implementation, Supportive supervision, mentoring and job training for all cadres of health workers on basic and comprehensive EMONC, the selection of clusters, facilitators, and participants to partake in the training of health workers, as well as the logistics concerning baseline and subsequent periodical data collection procedures. Trainings conducted to and re-educate participants to identify common obstetric emergencies, on proper clinical management, so as to improve obstetric care thereby decreasing maternal and neonatal mortality. Quarterly supervisory support was provided, while state subsequent mentoring ensued, and this ensured continued improvement in health care.

The project intervention consisted of advocacy visits to all the selected states ministry of health to solicit for their full support for the productive implementation of the project in their states, collection of baseline data in all the selected states, series of training for health providers and research Assistants on Emonc as well as project mentoring, monitoring and evaluation. Baseline data collection in some of the states revealed that some of health providers ….. The progress of the staff displayed in the Implementation of the technical backstopping project in the UNFPA supported states was measured by periodical achievement and performance at the facility level is compared against the baseline, some areas which needed improvement were …… , while the facility performance indices were measured by birth weight and still births, postpartum haemorrhage, mode of deliveries, obstetric complications.

Overall, trainings were conducted for forty-five (45) health personnel from Kaduna and Cross river (North East and South South) facilities consisting of. Two Local resource persons each from were mentored from Benue, cross river, Ebonyi, Ogun and Kaduna States. Knowledge impaction was also evaluated through pre- and post-test.

Save the Children Foundation Liberia: CPRH is working with this organization in strengthen capacity for emergency obstetric care and family planning services in Liberia.

Over the years, CPRH has pioneered and provides leadership for acquisition of RH service and research skills and has been in the forefront of translation of research into practice aimed at improving the quality of maternal, newborn and child health in the country

CPRH has a good complement of consultants who are available to participate from the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology Health Promotion and Education, Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Demography, Community Medicine, Institute of Child and Adolescent Health Sociology, among others combined to provide a wealth of experience and expertise that will effectively execute the tasks detailed therein.
